“This show is a gift for my fans” – Kylie Jenner
I’ve heard that you’re not supposed to look a gift-horse in the mouth, but I could hardly resist.
Kylie Jenner. One half of the Jenner sisters. One-fifth of the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Famous for her pout, curves and lip-synching Snapchats. Millionaire. Businesswoman. Fashion icon. And now… TV producer?
Kylie is certainly keeping herself busy. She’s got her own cosmetics and fashion brands, a running appearance on the immensely popular Keeping Up With The Kardashians, more dogs than I can count, AND a rapper boyfriend. Now she’s about to get even busier starring in her own television series Life of Kylie. The upcoming 8-part American reality television series set to debut on the 6th of August 2017.
The premise of the show follows the everyday life of Kylie Jenner, which obviously happens to be much more fabulous than yours or mine. According to Kylie, the series is meant to allow fans a closer look into both her life and the projects she’s currently working on.
To be fair, she never got enough screen time on Keeping Up With The Kardashians. She is after all a Jenner, whereas her Kardashian sisters are the producers of their own show and and hence their problems should take centrestage more than Kylie’s. But how much exactly of the real Kylie are we going to get to see? In the trailer for her docu-series, Kylie’s voice can be heard saying “When you grow up on camera, everybody feels like they know you. But they don’t”.
Indeed, as Kylie continues to grow older, she’s been the subject of immense scrutiny. From speculations, however accurate, about her cosmetic surgeries, stolen designs and love life, there isn’t very much about Kylie that the public thinks they don’t know. So could we potentially be looking to the Life of Kylie to be debunking some infamous rumours? That’s highly likely. And if the series trailer is anything to go by, then it’s clearly an attempt to normalise Kylie and make her more relatable.
She’s just like us! Look at her, flipping off her friends and picking her nose; Kylie has herself added that she’s long been putting up a cool and edgy persona to the world that’s apparently unlike her true self.
Is there reeeaaallllyyyy a need for a new reality show to prove that she’s not what everyone thinks? Probably. It could be said that this new reality show is an excellent marketing tactic that will not only benefit her image, but her namesake brands as well. And because it’s Kylie, it’ll work.
For those who know better, this is merely scratching the surface of what’s considered private and personal. Given that the show stems from the same network, E!Online, and is run by the same handful of producers as KUWTK, viewers can probably expect to see similar staged conversations, ‘unexpected’ drama, and awkward cuts.
But now, let’s address the elephant in the room; how are Kylie’s sisters dealing with this new path she’s taken? Is it still all love and no hate?
From what’s been said on interviews, it appears that Khloe and Kim are supportive of their sister’s new venture. In fact, Khloe had even said that they’re going to be viewers just like everybody else because they too don’t even know what Kylie does all day long. And where there may be teething issues in terms of sharing the spotlight, as a general Kardashian-rule, they’ve rarely wavered on their family-first outlook and are unlikely to do so now. Moreover, Kylie has already underlined that her show will deviate significantly from that of KUWTK.
In fact, on the flip side, Kim Kardashian West is treading onto Kylie’s territory with the recently announced launch of her own beauty line, KKW Beauty, set to hit stores on the 21st of June. However, the elder sister has been careful to ensure her product range (e.g. a contouring palette) does not overlap with those sold by Kylie Cosmetics. Tactics!
It appears that both sides are taking pains to ensure that they do not compete directly with each other. But frankly, competition between Kylie and the rest of her family is unavoidable – if not now then in the future. Fortunately, if momager Kris Jenner is the excellent business woman we know her to be, then all this will eventually serve to strengthen the Kardashian-Jenner brand as a whole.
So for those who still haven’t gotten enough of the Kardashian-Jenners, especially Kylie, fear not because they’re certainly not going anywhere.
