It was pop culture paradise at Marina Bay Sands last week, where the Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention (STGCC) 2016 was held. The walk down to the MBS convention centre saw assemblages of cosplayers decked out in their best costumes, all lying somewhere along the continuum of serious celeb-cosplayers to those just starting out with KC neon-coloured wigs. Those who attend these conventions just for the fashion ensembles were hardly disappointed, as the cosplay scene this year was exceptional, Train with notable cheap jerseys appearances from locally renowned ncaa cosplayers. Before you dismiss this annual conference as the ultimate geek-fest for fanatical Otakus and attention-seeking cosplayers, realise that STGCC offers so much more than anime mascots for you to laugh at – this convention that many may regard as lame or strange is actually (contrary to what your friends think) pretty cool.
Enter the hall and you immediately cheap nfl jerseys feel a noticeable energy in the air, with people flurrying from booth to booth to check out each special attraction. The layout of KOMBAT the STGCC was pretty hard to maneuver, even with the map provided at the doors. Fortunately this didn’t hinder overall flow, since the whole convention was sectioned thematically. There was a gaming section, a figurine section, a VR section, and an artiste section, most of which were further partitioned to demarcate smaller booths. This set-up also made it fun to “get lost” along the aisles and aisles of creative talent, toys and interactive activities.
The centre of the toy section featured a large booth from local toy production company XM Studios, which was certainly the highlight of the convention. Crowds were huddled around the various limited edition collectibles put on display, cheap jerseys intently gazing on the modelled superheroes/villains, their intricate details stunning even the non-fans. There was a certain gravitas that surrounded the booth’s main attraction: a scene of the X-Men fighting a humongous rendering of a Sentinel in the midst of throwing a punch, suspending the unlikely fate of our mutant superheroes in time.
Other booths also showcased life-sized replicas of Marvel heroes, such as Iron Man and Ant-Man, both of which were surrounded by smaller sized toys from recognisable Western sci-fi comics in glass enclosures (mini Stormtrooper bobble-heads, anyone?).
One thing that was different from previous years’ at the 2016 STGCC was the inclusion of virtual on reality tech in two different booths. Con-goers were allowed to tryout the latest in VR gear, including HTC’s Vive and Samsung’s Gear VR, on interactive game platforms. This was one experience that many didn’t want to miss out on, as queues to journey to the virtual frontiers snaked around these VR booths.
Overall, STGCC 2016 was a blast – much more animated than the slight humdrum fatigue lingering from last year’s convention. It would be interesting to see how future Cons integrate interactive elements to engage their fans, such as VR tech, especially with the focus shifting more towards premium collectibles and toys from the last few years (undoubtedly STGCC’s cash-cow).
Expect things to be ten times bigger next year, as 2017 marks STGCC’s tenth anniversary. We’ll be waiting.
